Chris Woakes takes these 7 interesting records with him into international retirement

Chris Woakes retired from international cricket in September 2025.

With age catching up with him – he is currently 36 years old – England all-rounder Chris Woakes has decided to call time on his international career.

With a total of 217 England caps across all formats, Woakes has been a loyal performer for England, setting several records along the way.

Having made his England debut on 12 January 2011, Woakes’ last performance for England was The Oval Test against India in August 2025.

Let’s take a moment to look at some of his most notable achievements.

1. 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in Tests and ODIs

An allrounder is somebody who should be able to hold their own in a team as either a batsman or a bowler.

Generally speaking, all-rounders tend to prefer one discipline over the other, and in the case of Woakes he is probably best described as a bowling allrounder.

But that said, he was more than useful with the bat. In both Test cricket and ODIs he passed the 1000 run and 100 wicket milestone.

His highest Test score was an undefeated 137 and he averaged 25.11 with the bat, while with the ball he averaged 29.61 and took a total of 192 wickets with a best return in an innings of 6/17.

2. Best bowling figures in an innings when not on winning side in ODIs

The most wickets any bowler has ever taken in an innings, and still been on the losing side, is six.

Woakes is one of 13 bowlers to have suffered this cruel fate. Woakes is joined on the list by the likes of Mitchell Starc, Dale Steyn, Imran Khan and Shane Bond. For Woakes it happened in a game against Australia in Brisbane in 2011.

He was named Player of the Match for his efforts, even though his side lost as he bagged the wickets of Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Cameron White, David Hussey, John Hastings and Brett Lee.

3. Third most runs in an ODI innings batting at eight

Coming in at number eight in an ODI against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in 2016 Woakes hit an undefeated 95.

Having arrived at the crease with the score on 82 for six and England needing 287 to win, Woakes shared a seventh wicket stand of 138 with Jos Buttler.

Buttler fell with the win in sight, and while England were not able to secure victory, Woakes’ efforts were nevertheless enough to see the match end as a rare tie.

Only two batsmen who have come in at eight in ODI cricket have scored more than Woakes – the men ahead of him are Ireland’s Simi Singh and Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz who both managed undefeated scores of 100.

4. Third on list of most catches held in an ODI innings

The record for most catches in an innings by a fielder is five (it’s shared between Jonty Rhodes and Harry Brook) and then there is a group of fielders who have bagged four.

Woakes is among that elite group. He achieved the feat against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in a Cricket World Cup game in 2019.

Although England ended the game on the losing side, Woakes put in a great effort in the field. He claimed three wickets with the ball and held four catches, only one of which could be described as regulation.

5. 21st on list of best bowling figures in a T20I

T20Is are not the easiest place for bowlers to shine, but Woakes showed his versatility as an all-format player when he returned figured of three wickets for four runs in a game against Australia in Canberra in 2022.

Although the game ended with no result due to rain, Woakes showed what he was capable of as he removed the Aussie top three (Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and Mitch Marsh) in a spell of just two overs.

6. 44th on list of most runs in an ODI career without a century

With a highest ODI score of 95 not out and a total of 1524 runs, Woakes is 44^th on the list of leading ODI run scorers never to have scored a century.

Woakes had 88 ODI innings and averaged a very respectable 23.81 at a strike-rate of 89.12.

By way of context the list of most ODI runs scored without a century is topped by a couple of Pakistani legends – Misbah-ul-Haq is top with 5122 runs and a highest score of 96* and Wasim Akram is second 3717 runs.

7. 30th on list of best bowling strike rate in a Test innings

Admittedly Woakes’ strike rate achievement didn’t happen against the strongest Test opposition as he mowed his way through Ireland in 2019 Test against Ireland at Lords.

In a curious came of extremes England were dismissed for 85 in their first innings. Ireland replied with a score of 207 before England gave themselves a fighting chance with a second innings dig of 303.

And then Woakes entered the fray… having gone wicketless in the first innings he returned figures of six for 17 in 7.4 overs (Chris Broad took the other four wickets) as Ireland were rolled for 38 to lose by 143 runs.
