Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell is not one to mince words, and his most recent opinion focused on all-rounder Samit Patel, who he says is 'obsessed' with what other people think of him.

Patel's form at the start of the County season was superb, averaging well above 50 with the bat, prompting many to tip him for a place in the England squad. But when he wasn't picked things went downhill.

Newell, and England selector, felt Patel lost his focus after not being picked for the Three Lions, and his average from June till the end of the season was just over 23.

Newell said in the Nottingham Post: "Samit had his moments. He started very well but has tailed off, certainly in terms of the Championship.

"It should be a coincidence that he tailed away after not getting in the England team. He needs to concentrate on his game.

"He gets too obsessed by what's going on around him rather than focusing on his batting.

"He was so good through April, May and June that his figures since then have been disappointing."
