New Zealand could only manage 190 after being put in to bat by India and the hosts would easily eclipse the paltry total to take a 1-0 series lead after a six wicket victory in the opening ODI in Dharamsala.

Tom Latham and Tim Southee provided the only batting highlights for the Black Caps as the duo recorded the only half centuries of the innings for the visitors.

Latham carried his bat and would finish on 79 not out off 98 balls and could only be criticized for his failure to take the bulk of the strike in his innings.

Three Black Caps batsmen were dismissed for ducks in a scorecard that Kiwi fans will find tough to read.

Southee smashed 55 off 45 balls to add some respectability to what threatened to be an embarrassing total.

Hardik Pandya was the pick of the India bowlers picking up 3 for 31 from 7 overs while Amit Mishra performed solidly as well taking 3 for 49 to wrap up the tail.

In reply India were happy to build an innings around the inspirational Virat Kohli after Rohit Sharma (14) went early on.

India produced a string of decent partnerships which proved to be enough to secure a straight forward victory.

Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane (33) put on 49, Kohli and Manish Pandey (17) put on 40 for the third wicket before skipper MS Dhoni (21) joined the master batsman to gather 62 runs leaving India on the brink of victory.

India cruised to a six wicket victory with 101 balls to spare and Kohli ending up on an unbeaten 85 off 81 balls including 9 fours and a six.

Doug Bracewell would pick up 1 for 44 from 8 overs in a lost cause.

The series moves to Delhi for the second ODI which will be contested on Thursday October 20.
