Josh Hazlewood dismisses Virat Kohli.
Josh Hazlewood has dismissed Virat Kohli 11 times in international cricket.

Virat Kohli found a degree of form in the third ODI against England in Ahmedabad on Wednesday as he narrowly avoided being run out early on to post a score of 52. It means he heads to the ICC Champions Trophy on the back of a useful half-century.

But in claiming his wicket, England’s Adil Rashid wrote himself into the record books as the bowler who’s dismissed ODI cricket’s third most prolific batsman of all time the most. Rashid has now claimed Kohli’s wicket 11 times, across all formats.

It might be a stretch to suggest Kohli is Rashid’s bunny, but let’s look at other bowlers who have made a habit of dismissing Kohli in international games.

=6. Ben Stokes (England) – dismissed Kohli 9 times

While a troublesome knee has limited Stokes with the ball in recent time, he remains a more than useful allrounder and a fierce competitor known for his knack of breaking crucial partnerships.

Kohli has fallen to Stokes on nine occasions, making him one of the few bowlers who have consistently managed to get the Indian maestro out. Stokes’ ability to generate extra bounce and movement off the pitch has proved to be a challenge for Kohli, particularly in English conditions.

=6. Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) – dismissed Kohli 9 times

One of the most fearsome fast bowlers in world cricket, Kagiso Rabada has also dismissed Kohli nine times. Rabada’s pace, aggression, and ability to move the ball both ways have made him a tough opponent for Kohli.

The South Africa quick has often managed to induce edges or force Kohli into mistimed drives, particularly on challenging wickets where seam movement is prominent.

=4. James Anderson (England) – dismissed Kohli 10 times

James Anderson is widely regarded as one of the best swing bowlers in cricket history, and his record against Kohli speaks volumes about his skill. Anderson has dismissed Kohli 10 times in ODI cricket, often troubling him in seaming English conditions.

In the 2014 England tour, Anderson had Kohli’s number, dismissing him multiple times and exposing a weakness outside the off stump. While Kohli countered him effectively in the 2018 tour, Anderson remains one of the bowlers who has troubled him the most.

=4. Moeen Ali (England) – dismissed Kohli 10 times

Moeen Ali may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking of bowlers who have dominated Virat Kohli, but his record tells a different story.

The England off-spinner has dismissed Kohli 10 times, using flight, turn, and variation to outfox him. Moeen’s ability to bowl tight lines and extract spin, especially in English conditions, has often led to Kohli’s downfall. While he has been particularly effective in Test matches, where his patience and accuracy have tested Kohli’s technique his ten dismissals of Kohli in ODIs put him one spot off the top.

=1. Tim Southee (New Zealand) – dismissed Kohli 11 times

Recently retired Black Caps quick Tim Southee built a reputation as one of New Zealand‘s most skilled swing bowlers, and his record against Kohli is a testament to his quality.

Having dismissed Kohli 11 times, Southee has used his ability to swing the ball both ways to trouble the Indian star. Whether in Tests or ODIs, Southee has frequently found ways to get Kohli out, often setting him up with deliveries that draw him into false shots.

=1. Josh Hazlewood (Australia) – dismissed Kohli 11 times

Josh Hazlewood is another bowler who has had great success against Kohli. With a disciplined approach, consistent line and length, and the ability to extract bounce from almost any surface, Hazlewood has dismissed Kohli 11 times.

His methodical approach, particularly in Test cricket, has seen him consistently trouble the Indian captain, making him one of the few bowlers who have repeatedly gotten the better of him.

=1. Adil Rashid (England) – dismissed Kohli 11 times

Having got rid of Kohli twice in the current series Adil Rashid now holds the distinction of dismissing Virat Kohli the most in ODIs. The leg-spinner has consistently troubled Kohli with his variations, including sharp turn, deceptive googlies, and flighted deliveries.

Rashid’s ability to make Kohli second-guess himself has led to several dismissals, making him one of the few bowlers to have such a record against the modern batting great.
