Shreyas Iyer is a future India captain

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has seen his name mentioned as a future India captain more than once and he is clearly a player who wants to lead.

The appointment of Rohit Sharma as India’s all-format skipper has the feeling of a short-term measure, and while there are plenty of candidates to succeed him, Shreyas makes a very good case.

Shreyas held talks with Kolkata Knight Riders before being snapped up at auction by the franchise, reportedly seeking assurances that he would be allowed to lead the team.

Shreyas Iyer could lead India sooner rather than later

While the player himself clearly has a keen interest in being skipper, it hasn’t been a one-sided obsession.

Shreyas was appointed as captain of India B for the 2018/19 Deodhar Trophy and has served as Mumbai’s vice-captain as well.

He was initially handed the Delhi Capitals captaincy before injury cost him the role which has remained with his replacement Rishabh Pant.

While he is somebody who is in the discussion to be skipper, his ascension is not set in stone.

Shreyas will need to maintain a regular place in the team before he can be considered for the role and he will not be alone in coveting the job.

His recent form has gone a long way towards letting the powers that be know that he should be in the XI in all three formats.

Shreyas still needs to prove himself as a leader, and he will get that opportunity while leading an ambitious IPL franchise.

KKR have been hovering just below the IPL’s best teams for the last few seasons depsite proving they can beat anyone on their day.

If Shreyas can lead the Knight Riders to IPL glory he will do his chances of skippering India no harm.

The Hitman’s seal of approval

Current skipper Rohit believes that Shreyas will continue to improve as he is exposed to international cricket.

“Shreyas just carried on from where he left off in the T20 series against Sri Lanka. He seemed to carry that form into the Test series.

“He knew he was stepping into the big shoes of guys like Rahane and Pujara, but he has everything that he requires. He will be better now when he starts travelling,” said Rohit.
