LISTEN: Boyd Rankin – An Irish perspective on an Ireland-less World Cup

Boyd.Rankin-PA

The Cricket Badger, James Buttler, recently caught up with bowling behemoth Boyd Rankin to get an honest and unabated view on the 2019 World Cup from across the Irish Sea.

Ireland have a rich history at recent World Cups, having secured memorable victories over fully fledged test playing nations Pakistan and Bangladesh (2007), England (2011) and the West Indies and Zimbabwe (2015).

However, structural changes to the format of the tournament in 2019 – reducing the number of participants from 14 to 10 – left Ireland with an uphill struggle to qualify for a tournament held so close to home shores.

Unfortunately for the men from the Emerald Isle, progression from the Super Sixes was not achieved which left a gaping shamrock-shaped hole in the tournament’s pristine linen.

Listen below to hear The Badger’s conversation with Boyd Rankin regarding the Cricket World Cup without the men in green.

Topics include:

  • Ireland’s first Cricket World Cup victory
  • Their omission from the 2019 edition
  • Punching above their weight
  • The effect it’s had on Irish cricket back home
