A rib injury has ruled all-rounder Corey Anderson out of the remainder of New Zealand's limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka.

Anderson underwent an MRI scan of his side on Wednesday and will miss the final ODI and two-match Twenty20 International series as a precautionary measure.

"Corey felt pain in his right side while bowling during the first ODI. Post-match assessment indicated a minor case of rib impingement," said team physiotherapist Paul Close.

"We decided it's in Corey's best interest to return home and focus on making a full recovery for the series against the West Indies."

Batsman Neil Broom has since joined the squad ahead of the final ODI, which will get underway at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Saturday.

The Black Caps lead the series one-nil after a washout and a four-wicket win at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.
