Batsmen Jesse Ryder and Martin Guptill have been named in New Zealand's squad for this month's ODI series against the West Indies.

Ryder has not played international cricket since February 2012 and has since served a six-month suspension for taking banned stimulants – and recovered from a severe assault suffered in Christchurch earlier this year.

"I set the goal to make it back earlier this year and it is a great end to a tough year for me. I am more motivated than ever to perform for the Black Caps," enthused Ryder.

Guptill, meanwhile, has recuperated from an ankle injury that prevented participation in tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Both players have garnered solid stretches of form in domestic cricket through November and December.

They young Tom Latham has been omitted, while fast bowler Adam Milne has been retained. Former Australian ODI cricketer has been confirmed as the lone wicketkeeper in the 13-man squad.

"We know Martin is a quality player at this level. You only need to look at his dominance in the one-day series in England during the year where he scored 189 not out and 103 not out," added national selector Bruce Edgar

His dynamic fielding is also a valuable asset for the team. Jesse gives us added firepower at the top of the order and he has a proven international record."

The Kiwis and Windies will meet for five ODIs, the first of which will get underway in Auckland on 26 December. Napier, Queenstown, Nelson and Hamilton will host fixtures two, three, four and five respectively. Two Twenty20 Internationals will follow.
