A broken thumb has ruled batsman Kane Williamson out of New Zealand's tour of Sri Lanka later this year.

Williamson was due to captain the side in the absence of the rested Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor, but sustained the fracture during the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh.

While a replacement skipper has yet to be named for the series in Sri Lanka, opener Luke Ronchi will substitute for Williamson in Bangladesh.

"This kind of injury unfortunately means Kane cannot take part in the rest of the tour and he will return to New Zealand to begin his rehabilitation," said team physiotherapist Paul Close. "Kane is about six weeks away from playing again at this stage."

The Tigers beat the Black Caps in Monday's series opener in Mirpur – thanks largely to captain Mushfiqur Rahim's 90 and seamer Rubel Hossain's six-wicket haul, which included a hat-trick.

The second ODI will get underway at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday.
