O’Keefe handed Test lifeline

Australia spinner Steve O’Keefe has been handed a recall to the Test squad following an injury to paceman Josh Hazlewood.

The selectors were happy with their squad depth in the quick bowling department with Pat Cummins playing the first Test while Jackson Bird acted as back up.

O’Keefe’s international career appeared to be over when a drunken outburst at a New South Wales Cricket function blotted his copybook however it appears Cricket Australia are prepared to forgive the left-arm spinner.

Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said in a statement: “With Jackson Bird in the squad we are comfortable with our fast-bowling options for the second Test and have elected to add an additional spinner given the conditions we are likely to face in Chittagong.”

Australia had three spinners in their squad already with veteran tweaker Nathan Lyon and left-armer Ashton Agar getting the nod ahead of uncapped leggie Mitchell Swepson for the first Test.

Allrounder Glenn Maxwell also turned his arm over during the defeat in Dhaka returning figures of 1/15 and 0/24.

Shakib spins Bangladesh to historic Test win

It seems unlikely that reserve allrounder Hilton Cartwright, who bowls seam, will be able to force his way into the XI even with Hazlewood absent though the Baggy Green could opt to send Agar up the order and axe Maxwell in order to wedge an extra specialist spinner in.

Bangladesh meanwhile have named an unchanged squad after their famous victory in Mirpur.

With Australia set to go straight on to India for an ODI series paceman Kane Richardson has been named as Hazelwood’s replacement for those clashes.

Australia squad: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Ashton Agar, Jackson Bird, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Steve O’Keefe, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade.
