Lorgat: Proteas will play on Boxing Day
Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO Haroon Lorgat confirmed that the Proteas will play on Boxing Day but stopped short of saying who the opponents will be or what format will be played.
The Proteas were initially slated to play India in the traditional Boxing Day Test but that tour has been pushed back with the first Test now set to start on the 5th or 6th of January.
Zimbabwe are rumoured to be lined up as potential opponents for a Boxing Day Test but could also play ODIs or T20Is over the festive period.
Lorgat said: “We will have content for Boxing Day but we’re not yet in a position to announce that. We need to secure it first.
“First prize is a Test match. We would love Boxing Day and New Year to remain as Test content.
“I know in the past there have been one-day matches and there has been discussion internally to consider one-dayers, but personally I would love to see a Test match played.”
Lorgat also said that CSA is close to finalising the fixtures for the India tour.
CSA is still hoping to stick to the four Test matches that was on the original schedule but all will be revealed in due course.
Lorgat said: “We are pretty close to closing off with India. I’m hoping we can make some announcements towards the latter half of this week.
“It’s less than ideal – we would have loved that schedule to have been announced a long time back but it is what it is.”
