Ashwin set for county stint with Worcestershire

India spinner Ravi Ashwin has signed to play for English county side Worcestershire on a short-term contract towards the end of the season.

Ashwin, who was left out of India’s squad for the limited-overs leg of the tour to Sri Lanka, could make his debut for his new team in a four-ay game against Glamorgan on 28 August.

The off-spinner could be available for only two county games if he is selected in India’s squad for the ODI series against Australia in September but if he is not selected Ashwin could play until the end of the season and help Worcestershire with  their promotion push.

Worcestershire are currently placed second in division two of the county championships and Ashwin could come up against India teammate Cheteshwar Pujara in his second match as the batsman is set to continue playing for top of the table Nottinghamshire.

India fast bowler Ishant Sharma has also signed on for a county stint and will play for Warwickshire while left-arm spinner Ravi Jadeja is also in talks to play in England.

The Asian side play England in the UK in a five-match Test series next year and any experience in English conditions could be valuable.
