That’s Numberwang! All the best stats from the last week
Another week of cricket has taken place, and with that inevitably come numbers in various forms. Whether in the form of the millions of runs scored by David Warner, or in the millions of tweets about Poor Joe Denly.
Here are our pick of the stats from a week that had some pretty exciting numbers about it, to be fair.
6.5 – Joe Root’s #RootMaths batting average for the recently concluded Test series in New Zealand. Worrying times for the England skipper
13/07/2006 – The date on which Alastair Cook completed the double of scoring a Test century both at home and away, the last England opening batsman to do so before Rory Burns matched him this week.
5 – Number of centuries scored by Tom Latham in his last 11 Test innings thanks to his 105 against England, which prompted commentators to challenge the world record for use of the word “underrated” in a single TV broadcast set only last week during BJ Watling’s epic innings.
1 – Number of runs more than Sir Donald Bradman’s highest Test score David Warner made against Pakistan in Adelaide. Also: the number of disrespects Warner showed Bradman by doing so. Also also: the number of WTC series wins by teams other than India. Also also also: the total number of runs scored by Stuart Broad in three innings against New Zealand.
3 – The number of drawn Tests out of 34 thus far in 2019. Also: the number of wicketkeepers England usually select, making their achievement in running out altogether in New Zealand all the more impressive.
7 – Wickets taken by Rahkeem Cornwall in Afghanistan’s first innings of the one-off Test against West Indies in Lucknow. Also: the total attendance across the three days of that game.
0 – England batsmen with more Test runs at a better average than Joe Root after he eased past Wally Hammond and into England’s all-time top 10 run-makers. Also: total number of worse dropped catches than Joe Denly’s in Test history. Also also: total career first-class stumpings by England Test wicketkeeper Ollie Pope. Also also also: total WTC points earned by New Zealand for their 1-0 win over England.

13 – Wickets taken by Neil Wagner in two Tests against England
14 – Wickets taken by Stuart Broad, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer in two Tests against New Zealand
5047.37 – Percentage increase in David Warner’s batting average from the Ashes (9.5) to David Warner’s batting average in the Pakistan Test series (489.0)
415.54 – Percentage increase in Jofra Archer’s bowling average from the Ashes (20.27) to Jofra Archer’s bowling average in the New Zealand Test series (104.50)
2 – How many of the three entry requirements David Warner now holds as he looks to become the second member of Chris Gayle’s Grand Slam Club for cricketers who have scored Test triple centuries, ODI double centuries and T20I centuries. Warner had none of the three just two months ago. Also: total number of Test runs scored by Stuart Broad across his last three overseas tours.
0.33 – Stuart Broad’s Test batting average from his eight innings on those three overseas tours.
0, 1, 0*, 0, 0*, 1, 0, 0 – Stuart Broad’s scores in his eight innings across five Tests and three continents on those overseas tours. That sequence is also the letter D in binary, so we think it’s the start of a coded message about David Warner.
30.33 – Stuart Broad’s Test batting average in his first 20 Tests.
7.76 – Stuart Broad’s Test batting average in his last 20 Tests.
8/43 – Rest in peace, Bob.
