CSK fall short despite Dhoni heroics
The Kings XI Punjab beat the Chennai Super Kings by four runs in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) contest in Mohali on Sunday despite the batting heroics of CSK skipper MS Dhoni.
Dhoni, who was battling a back injury, struck a 79 not out off just 44 balls but it was not enough for the team in yellow as they fell agonisingly short of the 198-run target.
Ambati Rayadu scored 49 from 35 deliveries but there was no other major contributions from the Super Kings’ batting line-up.
Andrew Tye took 2-47 for the Kings XI who held their nerve in the end to record their second victory in three games this season.
Earlier, opener Chris Gayle made a brutal return to IPL cricket as he blazed his way to 63 off just 33 balls as the Kings XI posted a formidable total of 197/7 in 20 overs.
There were solid contributions from Lokesh Rahul (37), Mayank Agarwal (30) and Karun Nair (30) while Imran Tahir (2-34) took two wickets for the visitors.
This was Chennai’s first loss of the season and leaves them in third place while the victory moves the Kings XI into second position on the eight-team table.
