India batsman Shreyas Iyer has spoken about his excitement while watching various franchises bid for him during the mega auction for the IPL 2022.

Eventually, Iyer was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 12.25 Crore and will captain the side in their quest to lift the title in the upcoming campaign.

Iyer has shown sublime form with the bat, particularly in T20 cricket of late, and was one of the hottest properties during the auction, where all the sides splashed the cash on their star players.

Speaking to Kolkata Knight Riders’ official website, Iyer recalled how he watched the auction on television and was elated when he was picked up by the two-time Indian Premier League champions.

“I was watching the auction and KKR went for me right from the start,” he said.

“There were some other big franchises as well coming along and I remember the battle was going on.

“We, all of our (India) team members were sitting together and watching the Auction on TV. My heart was pumping, and I wasn’t able to control my emotions.

“I was trying to act relaxed, but you know, I was feeling a little nervous.

“Eventually KKR got me, that feeling was amazing. I’m really proud, considering the rich history and to be coming into the KKR setup.”

Winning mentality

KKR is no stranger to success in the IPL, but under his leadership, Iyer said his main focus will be on establishing a winning mindset within the squad.

“You know, for me to be part of the KKR family is an enormous feeling,” he continued.

“I want to really appreciate the work which has been done by all the great players in the past and I would like to follow the same footsteps, which they have created for KKR.

“Personally, I feel that I’m a player’s captain and I want to create an atmosphere where all of us are thinking towards one goal, which is winning.”

Coached by former New Zealand captain Brendan McCullum, KKR also have the likes of Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Umesh Yadav in the squad.
