Most runs in an IPL season for Mumbai Indians – contextualising Suryakumar Yadav’s prolific 2025

He has played one Test, 37 ODIs and 83 T20Is for India, but somehow, he is still not a super-star. Compared to icons like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, Suryakumar Yadav can hardly be considered a household name.
But he is an amazing player, and he is currently enjoying a sensational season in the Indian Premier League. Now in his ninth season for the Mumbai Indians, Yadav is in the midst of his best ever IPL campaign.
With the Mumbai Indians through to the playoffs, Yadav will have at least one more opportunity to add to his run tally for the season (if things go well, he could have three more chances). At the end of the league phase of the competition he has scored 640 runs at an average of 71.11 from his 14 innings.
But how do his efforts from 2025 compare to the other Mumbai Indians batsmen over the last 18 seasons? As it turns out, it’s a list with not many names on it…
4. Sachin Tendulkar – 553 runs from 16 innings at a strike rate of 113.31
The 2010 season was perhaps the high point of Sachin Tendulkar’s IPL career. Leading Mumbai Indians with poise and consistency, Tendulkar piled on 553 runs and took his team all the way to the final.
While his strike rate of 113.31 may look pedestrian by modern standards, his class and timing ensured he was a steady anchor around which the rest of the batting revolved.
At the time, it was the second-highest season total in IPL history – a mark of the maestro’s adaptability in T20 cricket.
3. Suryakumar Yadav – 605 runs 16 innings at a strike rate of 181.13
Before 2025, Suryakumar Yadav’s best IPL season came in 2023, when he finally seemed to hit his peak. Displaying a full range of shots, SKY was breathtaking in the way he dominated bowlers with audacious angles and fearless intent.
With a stunning strike rate of 181.13, he didn’t just accumulate runs – he did so at a breakneck pace, often taking the game away from the opposition in the span of a few overs.
At the time, this was easily the best season by a Mumbai Indians batter since Tendulkar’s golden year.

2. Sachin Tendulkar – 618 runs 15 innings at a strike rate of 132.61
Tendulkar followed his 2010 form with another stellar performance in 2011, finishing with 618 runs.
He was slightly more aggressive with the bat this time, evidenced by a higher strike rate, but the hallmarks of his game remained unchanged – balance, shot selection and calm under pressure.
His consistency at the top was a vital factor in MI’s regular-season dominance that year.
1. Suryakumar Yadav – 640 runs 14 innings at a strike rate of 167.97
Suryakumar Yadav’s 2025 campaign is not just his best – it’s the best ever by a Mumbai Indians batter. In just 14 innings, he’s already scored 640 runs and done so at an astonishing average of over 70.
He has struck fear into bowlers with his wristy stroke play, 360-degree hitting and unmatched intent. Whether rescuing the innings or launching an assault from ball one, Yadav has been a force of nature.
It is worth noting that he has also set a record for the most consecutive innings in T20 cricket with scores of 25 runs or more.
He made it 14 innings of 25+ run scores last time out, beating the record of 13 that was previously held by South African Temba Bavuma. And the best part? There could be more to come in the playoffs.
