Ricky Ponting becomes head coach of Punjab Kings
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been named coach of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Ponting previously coached the Delhi Capitals. Like the Capitals, Punjab have never one the IPL – and will be among the longest outright title odds on the betting sites in India for next year’s tournament.
“I am grateful to Punjab Kings for presenting me with the opportunity to be the new head coach. I am excited to take up the new challenge. I had great conversations with the owners and the management about the way forward and was truly elated to see the alignment of our visions for the team,” said Ponting.
“We all want to repay the fans who have stayed with the franchise over the years and we promise that they will see a much different Punjab Kings going forward.”
Ponting has also worked with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL – and Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket in the United States of America. He has also been with the Hobart Hurricanes in Australia’s Big Bash League.
Punjab Kings chief executive officer Satish Menon added: “We are delighted to have Ricky on to guide and build our team for the next four seasons. His experience is crucial to help us develop a squad to deliver on-field success.
“His insights from his international coaching stints and as a television pundit would be vital in identifying talent ahead of the mega auction this year. His ability to develop cricketing and leadership skills will play a crucial role in our success. ”
The Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai are the most successful teams in the history of the IPL with five titles each. The Kolkata Knight Riders are the reigning champions.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore have also never won the IPL title. The Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural title in 2008.
The Capitals, meanwhile, have confirmed a partnership with Ludimos – a leading cricket technology platform.
