All-rounder Shahid Afridi is confident Pakistan will beat South Africa, despite the return of fast bowler Dale Steyn and batsman Hashim Amla for the remainder of the ODI series.

The Proteas won by one run in Sharjah and Pakistan triumphed by 66 runs in Dubai, leaving the five-fixture affair level ahead of Wednesday's third fixture in Abu Dhabi.

Amla, who was rested for the first two fixtures, and Amla, who was on paternity leave, have since returned.

"There is no doubt Amla and Steyn will strengthen South Africa but the way our bowlers are doing, I am sure we can beat South Africa," said Afridi.

"I am enjoying the game. This current team is a mix of seniors and juniors and I am feeling younger with each passing day.

"The batting needs to be improved, it's a matter of applying ourselves, like the way Ahmed Shehzad is playing, so I am sure improvement will come."

The right-handed former captain has not scored a half-century in ODI cricket since July, when a 76-run blitz contributed to a heavy victory over the West Indies in Guyana.

"I got a bad ball which I hit and got out, it could have been a six the other day. It's not Afridi versus South Africa, it's Pakistan versus South Africa," he concluded.
