England have included the uncapped Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan and Sam Robson in a new-look squad for next week's first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's in London.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior and fast bowler Stuart Broad have been named in the 12-man party despite respective Achilles and knee injury concerns.

Fast bowler Liam Plunkett, who has not played Test match cricket since June 2007, and all-rounder Chris Woakes have been recalled. All-rounder Ben Stokes, wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, leg-spinner Scott Borthwick, fast bowler Boyd Rankin, the exiled Kevin Pietersen and opener Michael Carberry have been omitted.

Plunkett's impressive stretch of recent form was characterised by a telling second-innings four-wicket haul in Yorskhire's big victory over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road this week.

The Australian-born Robson, who qualified to play for England earlier this year, has amassed several centuries in Division One of the 2014 County Championship. Ali, meanwhile, has accrued 371 runs at the solid average of 74.20 in Division Two.

"We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of both the county and England Performance Programme coaches in helping to develop the talents of Sam Robson, Liam Plunkett, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes," said national selector James Whitaker.

"All four have carried their exciting winter form into the domestic season to earn well deserved recognition. We believe that this group of emerging talent will be very well complemented by the established core of experienced players that have been selected."
