Maxwell wants to shed ‘X-factor’ tag

Glenn Maxwell is eyeing a berth in Australia’s top six in the upcoming Ashes, also saying he wants to shed the tag that he is an ‘X-factor’ player.

Maxwell is facing a battle to keep his place in Test team against England with him not scoring a half-century since hitting his maiden Test ton in India in March.

The hard-hitting right-hander was always considered a player that has the ability to do something different and can take the game away from opposition.

However, the Victoria player wants to squash any talk about being an ‘x-factor’ batsman, saying he’ll build his case on being more reliable with the willow.

Maxwell said on Thursday: “I’m not talking about the word ‘X-factor’ again.

“I think they (selectors) made it pretty clear that they wanted the top six batters in the country and I want to put my hand up and be one of them.

“I have ability to score quickly at stages but I think, the way I’ve been playing recently, I’ve been more concentrating on just playing good cricket shots and making sure that I’m there for a longer period of time.”

After failing in both innings in the first Sheffield Shield game of the season, Maxwell bounced back with a pair of fifties for Victoria against South Australia.

He has one more first-class game to impress the national selectors before the Australia squad for the Ashes is announced.

The first of five Ashes Tests starts in Brisbane on 23 November.
