A calf injury has ruled vice-captain Matt Prior out of England's tour fixture against an Australian Invitational XI, which will get underway on Wednesday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow will replace Prior for the three-day match in Sydney, with the visitors optimistic the latter will be fit for the first Ashes Test, starting in Brisbane on 21 November.

"Matt has been ruled out of the tour game starting on Wednesday with a low-grade tear of his left calf," said an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman.

"He will continue his rehabilitation and recovery with a view to being picked for the first Test."

Batsman Kevin Pietersen, meanwhile, is nursing a recurring knee injury – and has traveled to Melbourne for a cortisone injection.

"I don't know the XI. But I'd have thought he's definitely up for selection, and would have thought Kevin play," added team-mate Ian Bell.
