England batsman Ian Bell we impressed with the way Jos Buttler batted on debut on day two of the third Test against India, saying he adapted his aggressive game well to the situation.

Buttler made 83 in Southampton, helping his side to 569 for seven declared late on day two, and aside from a chance when he was on 0, which Bell talked him through, he was confident and in-form.

Bell said: "He was outstanding. I think he nicked one that didn't quite carry … and it looked like he was thinking a little bit too much. We spoke after that about playing the way he plays – the natural instinct he has.

"As soon as that happened, he got off with a nice back-foot punch for three – and from then on he looked like the Jos Buttler that we see play county cricket or one-day internationals.

"That's the kind of player he is, and has to be … see the ball, and hit the ball. If we get platforms for him to come in, he's going to come in and move that scoreboard on and get us into match-winning positions – no doubt."

The veteran was pleased with his own innings too, having scored his fourth century at the Rose Bowl, and making 167. He was pleased with the way the track played, coming onto the bat but also giving his own bowlers some help later on.

Bell said: "It's a great place to come and bat. You've got a fast outfield and a wicket that probably has as much pace and bounce in it as any in the country so it's nice, you can play your shots and let the ball come on.

"It's nice to contribute with a big hundred, which is good. Gary Ballance again was exceptional, carrying on from (Sunday). It was really nice and Jos Buttler finished it off in style which is exactly what we wanted."

He said of the bowlers and the one wicket taken in the evening: "Jimmy Anderson was outstanding with the ball – all the bowlers were – so it's set up really nicely for us.

"It would have been nice to get two, but to start off with it was great and hopefully we can do the same (on Tuesday). There was plenty of swing going on and the pace was good from the bowlers as well."
