Buttler replaces Prior in England squad

England have called Lancashire wicketkeeper Jos Buttler into the Test squad for the third Test against India, replacing the injured Matt Prior, who is off for Achilles surgery.

After a long delay on Tuesday afternoon, prompting speculation of a captaincy change announcement, it was all a bit anti-climactic as Buttler was expected to be called upon after Prior announced his intentions.

Other than that one change, the ECB sent spinner Simon Kerrigan back to Lancashire after he trained with the squad ahead of the second Test, but was not picked for Lord's. Alastair Cook remained as captain, as he said he would.

With India leading the five-Test series one nil after their 95-run win at Lord's, there had been chatter that Cook would be sacked, despite saying he wanted to stay in the role. The selectors went with his wishes for Southampton.

Buttler comes into the squad with some experience behind him, having cemented himself as England's limited-overs keeper. He has 33 ODIs and 36 T20 caps, averaging nearly 33 in one-dayers and with one century.

Third Test Squad: Cook, Ali, Anderson, Ballance, Bell, Broad, Buttler, Jordan, Plunkett, Robson, Root, Stokes, Woakes
