The uncapped Ben Stokes, Boyd Rankin and Gary Ballance and the inexperienced Michael Carberry have been named in England's 17-man squad for the Ashes series in Australia later this year.

Seamer Graham Onions, batsmen Nick Compton, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara and James Taylor, meanwhile, were excluded. All-rounder Tim Bresnan was not considered due to injury – but will travel to Australia to "maximise his rehabilitation opportunities with the medical team."

Spinner Monty Panesar, released by Sussex on disciplinary grounds after urinating on a security guard at a Brighton nightclub, was chosen ahead of fellow slow bowlers James Tredwell and Simon Kerrigan.

"We are fully aware that the Ashes series will once again be fiercely contested and that this squad will need to work extremely hard and play to a very high level to retain the Ashes and we believe we have selected a squad capable of doing just that," said national selector Geoff Miller.

"As we have seen in previous series we will need all members of the squad ready to step up and make vital contributions throughout the five Tests and we feel that all 17 players have the ability to do that. There is real competition for places with both bat and ball and we feel that we have provided Andy Flower and Alastair Cook with a well balanced squad."

Stokes, Rankin and Carbbery impressed in this month's ODI series against the same opposition, while Ballance has enjoyed a solid stretch of form at county level this season.

The right-handed Jonny Bairstow was retained despite recent struggles against the Australians, and wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior was named as vice-captain. All-rounder Chris Woakes, too, was omitted.
