De Kock ruled out, Vilas called up at last minute

South Africa wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock has been ruled out of the third Test against England at the Wanderers Stadium, after picking up a freak knee injury on Wednesday.

De Kock sustained an injury to his right knee on Wednesday evening, and will be replaced by Dane Vilas in the starting XI. Vilas, at the time of writing, was on a flight from Port Elizabeth, at risk of not being at the ground in time for the start.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained: "Quinton slipped and sprained his right knee at home late yesterday afternoon.

"Initially he didn't think it was too serious but woke up after midnight in pain and with a swollen knee. He will have investigations done later today to ascertain the extent of the injury."

Vilas was supposed to be playing a Sunfoil Series four-day match for the Cape Cobras against the Warriors. AB de Villiers will take the gloves if the Proteas field first until Vilas arrives.

The 30-year-old is coming off a career-best 216 not out in last week’s round of Sunfoil Series matches. His last Test for the Proteas was against India last month.
