Dhoni sanctioned after criticising umpire

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been fined by the IPL after calling an umpire's decision 'horrible' after his side lost to the Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier on Tuesday.

Dhoni, commenting on Dwayne Smith's LBW dismissal, said after the match: "We lost too many (wickets) in the middle, not to forget Dwayne Smith got a horrible decision to start off by any standards.

"We need to blame ourselves we were not up to the mark, we need to lift our game and play more sensibly with the bat."

The IPL code of conduct forbids players from criticising an umpire's decision to the media, which the India captain would have been aware of but forgot in the heat of the 25-run defeat.

The IPL statement read: "After the Pepsi IPL Qualifier 1 match in Mumbai last evening, MS Dhoni captain of Chennai Super Kings was fined 10% of his match fee by the match referee for inappropriate public comment in relation to an umpire’s decision.

"Mr. Dhoni admitted the level 1 offence (Article 2.1.7 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials) and accepted the sanction."
