Proteas coach Russell Domingo said on Tuesday that all-rounder Jacques Kallis and premier fast bowler Dale Steyn would be available to take on India in their series-opening encounter in Johannesburg on Thursday.

While it was reported that the pair were recovering from injury, Domingo gave his assurance that the reason for their absence from the end of the Pakistan series was purely precautionary.

"I'm sure they will be fine," Domingo said two days before his toughest test a Proteas coach gets under way in the Bullring.

"When Jacques Kallis is fit, available, ready to play and in good form any coach would have him in their team."

Domingo admitted that the inclusion of the world's premier all-rounder would always complicate his selection process, but was adamant that local conditions would be the aspirin to what was often his biggest headache.

"We are looking forward to getting onto faster maybe more bouncy wickets where spin is not such a huge factor," he said when quizzed about his team's recent struggles against Pakistan.

He insisted that his team was capable of playing spin and lauded Saeed Ajmal for a series where he stole the show at some very crucial times.

The coach added: "I don't think it is spin bowlers (that we struggle to face), I think it is mainly one or two spin bowlers. Ajmal might be rated number one in the world.

"He's a world class spinner and has been for a some time, particularly if you play him in conditions like Dubai, Cape Town, I guess Port Elizabeth also suits him well, it is always tough.

"A lot of batters have struggled against him and a lot of batters will struggle against him, so I don't think we have a weakness in spin bowling, it is just that he is a world class bowler and has dominated many teams and I'm glad he is back in Pakistan at the moment, that's for sure."
