Elgar joins Surrey for short stint

County Cricket

South Africa international batsman Dean Elgar has joined English county side Surrey until 1 July as they are nursing several injuries as well as international call-ups.

Elgar will be available for two first-class matches and a NatWest T20 Blast fixture before he joins up with the Proteas as they will be touring Bangladesh later in July.

Surrey's overseas player for the season, Kumar Sangakara, as well as Jason Roy is on international duty while Moises Henriques and Rory Burns are still recovering from their injuries after their nasty collision in a T20 game.

Steven Davies is also injured, while Kevin Pietersen is in the Caribbean playing in the CPL.

Surrey's director of cricket, Alec Stewart said: "Following Moises Henriques' injury and with Kumar Sangakkara currently playing for Sri Lanka, it is greatly appreciated that Cricket South Africa have allowed Dean Elgar to play for us before he joins up with the Test team for their tour of Bangladesh."

Surrey are pushing hard for promotion from division two in the County Championship.
