Former England spinner John Emburey has been diagnosed with skin cancer, and reckons his cricketing career, with long hours in the sun, was a major contributing factor.
The 61-year-old took 147 wickets in 64 Test matches for England, and has undergone surgery to treat the condition. He conceded that when he played cricket, not as much thought was given to skin protection as there is today.
He told The Sun: "It's the result of playing cricket for so many years, not wearing a hat and not wearing sun cream.
"When I played, there wasn't the same awareness of how much damage the sun can cause as there is now."
He added of his condition: "It isn't the most aggressive form or life-threatening. They say it can be eliminated through surgery and there might not be a scar."
