Faf in race against time to be fit for India tour

News

Although he was selected in all three squads on Thursday, South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis is in a race against time to be fit for the Proteas tour to India.

Du Plessis missed the recent three-match ODI series against New Zealand with a knee injury and his recovery is going slower than expected.

The right-handed batsman is the captain of the Proteas in the T20 format but will struggle to make the first international match of the tour, a T20 on 5 October.

South Africa's team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: "The injury has responded slower than expected. Faf saw a knee specialist in Cape Town last week, where he received a second cortisone injection into the area.

"This seemed to have worked as he is currently pain-free. However, we need to see how he progresses. The plan is to commence training next week and build up to full intensity by the end of the month."

The Proteas are scheduled to play three T20s, five ODIs and four Tests in India.
