All-rounder James Faulkner has been earmarked for future leadership within Australian cricket after being named captain of the A side.

Faulkner has enjoyed a superb impact on the Test, ODI and T20I units since February 2013's debut – and has been rewarded with the captaincy at representative level.

"James is a young man with plenty of character and possesses a great desire to win," said national selector Rod Marsh. "He is still developing as an all-rounder but we believe this captaincy provides him an opportunity to do that as well as develop his leadership skills."

Australia A will meet Indian and South African counterparts for four first-class fixtures, in Brisbane and Townsville, in July and August.
