Finn: Right call has been made on Compton
England's decision to retain batsman Nick Compton for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which will get underway in Leeds on 19 May 2016, has pleased fast bowler Steven Finn.
Finn and Compton were named in a relatively new-look 12-man collective for the three-match series opener at Headingley. The uncapped James Vince and Jake Ball, too, have been included.
The right-handed Compton managed scores of 85, 49, 45, 15, 26, duck, 19 and six during the series victory over South Africa earlier this year – and will likely continue to occupy the important number three berth in the batting order against the sub-continental unit.
"I think ultimately the right decision has been made. He batted at three in a successful tour against at the time the number one Test team in the world in their own conditions and averaged 30, which I don't think is a disgrace at all," said Finn.
"He played for the team a lot. He set up innings and let they guys who bat at four, five, six and seven to come in and play in the aggressive manner that they did. The right call has been made."
Chester-le-Street in Durham and Lord's in London will hosts Tests two and three, respectively. Five ODIs and a one-off Twenty20 International will follow.
