First Test ends in a draw at Trent Bridge

The first Test between England and India at Trent Bridge ended in a draw on Sunday, with India's tail end again batting out the day to prevent England from getting a win on the board.

Stuart Binny and Bhuvneshwar Kumar again embarrassed their top order colleagues by scoring half centuries, as the intensity dwindled out of the game, so much so that Alastair Cook bowled only his second and third international overs.

The highlight of the day, aside from the early wickets that threatened to provide some excitement, was Cook's maiden Test wicket. A dross leg side delivery was edged behind by Ishant Sharma at the end of the day, to the skipper's delight.

As it was, India reached 391 for nine at the close, with Kumar unbeaten on 63, adding to the 58 he made in the first innings as the tailenders from both sides showed their team-mates up throughout the game.

India began the day three wickets down on 167, already holding a 100-plus lead. They lost Virat Kohli soon after the start, and Ajinkya Rahane and MS Dhoni soon followed, leaving India on 230 for six at lunch.

England would still have had glimmer of hope for a win then, but an impressive stand between Binny and Ravi Jadeja soon put paid to that idea, as they ate up 21 overs for 65 runs in the afternoon.

Once Jadeja departed with the score on 249, Kumar joined Binny and they continued to ensure a draw. They batted for 19.5 overs and went at more than four to the over, pushing the lead beyond what England could chase, even if they had taken the last wickets quickly.

The evening session saw India already holding a lead of 300 at tea, and thoughts of putting a struggling Cook in to bat were discarded by MS Dhoni. He opted to bat out the day, and was amused to see Cook having a bowl at the end of play, as did Gary Ballance.

The second Test is at Lord's, starting on 17 July, and Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan has been called into the squad for that match.
