India batsman Gautam Gambhir may not be part of the Test side to face South Africa in two Tests this month, but has still handed out some advice, saying the batsmen need to show a lot of 'grit' when facing the Proteas.

Gambhir has not played for India in a Test since December last year, but has experience on the fast South African pitches, having played in Centurion and Cape Town in 2011. He made twin fifties at Newlands and one at Supersport Park.

Gambhir told PTI: "When you play on pitches like those in South Africa, you need to show a lot of mental toughness. You have to be gutsy and have the grit to succeed in adverse conditions.

"One needs to have the ability to go out and hang in there despite all odds."

The visitors lost the ODI series recently two-nil, and could have been whitewash if not for rain arriving to save them. But the veteran opener feels his colleagues have what it takes to beat the number one Test side.

He felt India could do well despite recent events, adding: "I believe that this Indian team has the ability to do well on South African soil. We have done well earlier and there is no reason we can't do it again.

"The batsmen need to score well but they can only set it up for the bowlers. It's the bowlers who need to take wickets in order to win the matches."
