Gavaskar: Rahane will succeed at number three

India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has backed the Indian management's decision to promote Ajinkya Rahane to the number three position in the Test side's batting line-up.

In the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka, Rahane moved from number five, where he batted in the first Test, and swapped positions in the order with Rohit Sharma.

Rohit got the nod for the Test matches by the India selectors ahead of Cheteshwa Pujara, who was the regular for the last two years or so.

Gavaskar said: "Having seen Ajinkya Rahane making adjustments to his cricket all around the world, he will succeed giving a long time and will make a success of the No.3 spot. Technically and temperamentally he is very good.

"If he is successful then it solves the problem for many in the order though the opening slot is still a problem. If Rahane does well at No.3, it allows Rohit Sharma to bat at 5, a position he is lot comfortable at."

Gavaskar, who scored than 10000 runs in 125 Tests for India, also pleaded with everyone to stop analysing the captaincy of Virat Kohli.

Kohli only took over from MS Dhoni as India's Test captain at the start of this year and Gavaskar said he is allowed to make mistakes and grow into the role.

Gavaskar continued: "Why do we make so much of Virat's captaincy? Look he is into his fourth or fifth Test. He is going to make some mistakes, it's part of the game.

"He is learning and look at the way his batting has improved by leaps and bounds because he is such a committed cricketer. Give him a little more time."
