The West Indies will be without opening batsman Chris Gayle for the rest of the ODI series against India, and possibly for the Test series against New Zealand, after his picked up a hamstring tear on Thursday.

Gayle was run out in the first over of the first ODI in Kochi, but in the process injured himself and had to be stretchered off the field. The Windies were then bowled out for 211.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr Bipin Theruvil, who treated Gayle at the ground, told PTI that a scan had shown that Gayle had a "hamstring tear on his left leg and small blood clot around.

"The injuries will take at least two to four weeks to heal."

The Tests against the Black Caps begin on 3 December in Dunedin.
