Batsman Mohammad Hafeez welcomed the Man of the Match award, after Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 11 runs in Wednesday's first ODI at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Hafeez scored an outstanding 122 during a 129-delivery stay, including seven fours and a quartet of sixes, pushing the final total to a formidable 322 for five.

Debutant Sharjeel Khan and the inexperienced Sohaib Maqsood, meanwhile, weighed in with a key 61 and 73 respectively.

Sri Lanka's reply was insufficient, amounting to 311 all out in 49.4 overs – despite a fighting half-century from opener Kusal Perera and a record 87-run alliance for the eighth wicket between aspiring all-rounders Seekkuge Prasanna and Sachithra Senanayake.

"It was much-needed for me, Maqsood batted well, Sharjeel started well. I really wanted to do something in this game," enthused Hafeez.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq expressed pride in the performances of Hafeez and Khan, but implored Pakistan to put in a decidedly stronger effort in the field come the second ODI, which will get underway in Dubai on Friday.

"It was a much-needed innings from Hafeez, Sharjeel a good prospect. We need to improve on the bowling and fielding, too many lapses. If the team is winning, I don't want to bat," he concluded.
