Hales tops T20I rankings

England's Alex Hales has sprung to the top of the International Cricket Council rankings for Twenty20 International batsmen.

England's Alex Hales has sprung to the top of the International Cricket Council rankings for Twenty20 International batsmen.

Hales struck a quickfire 94 in Saturday's 27-run triumph over Australia at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, where the two-match series ended level at a win apiece.

The performance, which spanned a mere 61 deliveries and featured 11 fours and two sixes, earned Hales the Man of the Match award and saw him leapfrog New Zealander Brendon McCullum to first position.

"This was a big tick – not only for Hales but for the selectors too," said former England opening batsman Nick Knight. "I like Hales. Whether he is going to go on and play in the ODIs, well we shall wait and see. He is going to have to sit tight for a while I think."

The team rankings remained unaffected by the series, with the English and Aussies holding sixth and seventh spot respectively. The gap between the arch rivals, however, was cut from 11 points to nine.

Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez, meanwhile, has reclaimed the helm of the rankings for ODI all-rounders. Hafeez, who reached the summit once before in January, scored 232 runs in three innings and clinched six wickets in last month's two-one series victory over Zimbabwe.
