Fast bowler Ryan Harris is unlikely to be named in Australia's squad for October's Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

Harris, key to Test series triumphs over South Africa and England earlier this year, underwent knee surgery recently.

"Ryan is definitely touch and go for Dubai, we've just got to see how his knee goes over the next few months," said assistant coach Craig McDermott.

"I don't think there's any point rushing Ryan either, we've got a lot of cricket with India, World Cup, West Indies and the Ashes, we've got to make sure he's 100 percent when he comes back."

The Australians are also waiting on the fitness of seamer James Pattinson. The 24-year-old, who is battling a recurring back injury, has not played first-class cricket since March.

Pakistan and the Aussies will meet for two Tests, which will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
