The West Indies have named fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Jerome Taylor and spinner Sulieman Benn in a strong squad for this month's first Test against New Zealand.

They have also added Jason Holder to the line-up, a few days later, without removing someone else, and without explaining why. That makes four pacemen in the squad.

Opening batsman Chris Gayle, who is nursing a back injury hampered by participation in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League, has been retained. All-rounder Dwayne Bravo was not considered due to a shoulder injury.

The 14-man party will be captained by wicketkeeper-batsman Denesh Ramdin, who succeeded all-rounder Darren Sammy recently. Sammy has since retired from Test match cricket, but has kept the Twenty20 International captaincy.

Benn has not played international cricket since March 2011, but has gathered a fine stretch of form at first-class level this season. Taylor, too, will end a lengthy hiatus. He last represented the West Indies in June 2010.

Roach is returning from a shoulder injury – and spinner Sunil Narine was not considered after opting to play for the Kolkata Knight Rider's in Sunday's IPL final rather than meet the West Indies Cricket Board's 1 June deadline for a predatory camp.

"Kemar has gone very well in the last couple of days. He is back up to speed, there's no concern with him. He is bowling, throwing and doing everything you would expect from an international cricketer," said coach Ottis Gibson.

The Windies and Black Caps will meet for three Tests – in Jamaica, Trinidad and a third venue to be confirmed – and two Twenty20 Internationals – in Dominica – between 8 June and 6 July.

First Test squad: Denesh Ramdin (captain), Sulieman Benn, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kirk Edwards, Shannon Gabriel, Chris Gayle, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Shane Shillingford, Jerome Taylor, Jason Holder.
