Australia all-rounder Steve Smith has been sent back Down Under after picking up a minor quadricep injury during training in England, ahead of the one-day series.

Smith was part of the Ashes Test squad that lost three-nil, but he was one of the Aussies's best performers with the bat, making his maiden Test century and averaging 38.33 over 10 innings.

According to a Cricket Australia statement, he picked up the injury during training this week, and after a medical check it was decided that he would go home. No replacement will be named.

"Smith sustained a very minor left quad strain at training and after a demanding Ashes series the national selection panel (NSP) has decided it is best for him to return to Australia," a statement read.

"The NSP has advised that no replacement player will be added to the squad."
