Injury scares for Johnson and Bailey

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and batsman George Bailey's participation in the first Ashes Test has been cast into doubt.

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and batsman George Bailey's participation in the first Ashes Test has been cast into doubt.

Johnson endured a foot injury during Western Australia's first-class fixture against South Australia in Perth, while Bailey was struck on the arm by a short delivery during Tasmania's match with Queensland at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

While the extent of the injuries had yet to be ascertained, they brought further concern for an Australian unit already waiting on the fitness of Shane Watson, who hurt a hamstring during the seven and final ODI in India last week.

"It goes without saying that Shane and the medical team will be doing everything possible to get him fit and available for selection ahead of the first Test," said team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.

"We will be assessing him on a daily basis and expect to have a clearer picture of his progress later in the week."

Left-armer Johnson has not played Test match cricket since March, but has enjoyed a solid stretch of form at domestic level recently.

The uncapped Bailey, meanwhile, has pressed for a maiden call-up on the back of three half-tons and a century in the limited-overs series against the Indians.

The squad for the first Test, which will get underway in Brisbane on 21 November, on Tuesday.
