Jayasuriya: We have the best bowling side in the world

Ahead of their three-match Test series in England, Sri Lanka chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya claims that they have the best bowling attack in the world but the batsmen are 'lagging' behind.

Sri Lanka have selected pacemen Dhammika Prasad, Shaminda Eranga, Nuwan Pradeep, Suranga Lakmal and Dushmantha Chameera for the Tests in England while they will be complimented by the spin of veteran Rangana Herath.

All the bowlers, except Chameera, were part of the squad that beat England in England for the first time in 2014, and Jayasuriya is confident they will be up to the task again.

However, the batting department has undergone a huge transition since that historic tour two years ago with stalwarts Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara having retired since then.

Stepping into the chief selector role for the second time, Jayasuriya said it was important that players like Lahiru Thirimanne be given an extended run in the side to gain form.

Jayasuriya said: "The one department we are really good at is bowling. We have the top best bowling side in the world – five fast bowlers and spinners who are all experienced and very good.

"The only thing which we are lagging behind is our batting that is where you need to give them a little bit of time. You can't find batsmen overnight you have to be a bit more patient with them.

"That is why we have given a chance to Thrimanne; we know how he can perform. He is going through a lean patch and he should get out of it very soon."

After playing two warm-up games, Sri Lanka start their Test series against England at Headingley on 19 May.
