Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has been released from Australia's squad for the remainder of the seven-match series in India.

Johnson will travel to Perth on Thursday to prepare for the upcoming Ashes series, with the hosts set to name the squad for the first Test on 12 November.

"Mitch has performed very well in India. However, we believe it is best for his preparation ahead of a busy season to have him return home to increase his bowling loads in preparation for the Ashes Test window," said Cricket Australia's general manager of team performance Pat Howard.

Left-armer Johnson took seven wickets in five games in India at an average of 33.42 and 5.68 economy rate.

The series is currently locked two-all. Matches four and five were declared no-results due to heavy rain in Ranchi and Cuttack. The seven and final fixture will get underway at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Saturday.
