Knee injury rules Malinga out of IPL season

Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga will not play any part in this season's Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a knee injury after being assessed by the Mumbai Indians' medical staff.

The fast bowler has been troubled with the injury since last year November which has restricted him to just two T20I games for his country.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Board said Malinga will be checked by their doctors to determine if the 32-year-old will require surgery.

A press release from the SLC said: "Mr. Malinga will present himself before the SLC panel of expert doctors on Wednesday (April 20) and depending on the outcome of the said medical examinations, be required to face a match fitness grading, after which SLC will take the next appropriate steps."

The troublesome knee is expected to keep Malinga out of Sri Lanka's upcoming tour to England as well as the Caribbean Premier League.

Mumbai Indians have not as yet named a replacement for Malinga but coach Ricky Ponting has previously said the franchise have sufficient cover if the bowler with the sling action is ruled out.
