Spinner Nathan Lyon has welcomed Australia's employment of former Sri Lanka spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan ahead of a tough series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

Lyon and emerging slow bowlers James Muirhead, Will Bosisto, Clive Rose and Matthew Short were recently mentored by Muralitharan and spin bowling coach John Davision as part of the National Cricket Centre Spin Program.

The veteran Muralitharan has since been hired as a coaching consultant for a challenging tour that will feature a one-off Twenty20 International, three ODIs and two Tests between 5 October and 3 November.

"It wasn't like I rocked into Colombo, worked with Muralitharan and suddenly I could bowl a new ball. I've been working with Davison for a while now just to nut out a few different variations," said Lyon.

"To have Muralitharan on board for the UAE is fantastic. I learned some things over there and it's awesome to be around one of the greats of the game."

The 26-year-old Lyon has clinched 112 wickets in 33 Tests at an average of 32.99 since August 2011's debut against the Sri Lankan in Galle.
