Sri Lanka will be without veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene for the limited-overs series against Pakistan in the UAE in December, after he asked to be left out due to family matters.

Jayawardene's wife is expecting their first child next months, so he asked to stay at home and give his slot to someone else, rather than risk upheaval during the tour. He is expected to be available for the three-Test series, which starts on 31 December.

Also rested was spinner Rangana Herath, with the selectors saying he had been playing more than enough cricket of late. He would not have been in the ODI squad in any event.

New names called up were batsman Kithuruwan Vithanage and legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna, while opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne was given another chance despite being dropped during the series against New Zealand.
