Former batsman Andy Waller performed the role for more than a year after predecessor Alan Butcher's contract was not renewed in early 2013.

Waller has since been elevated to the national director of coaching role, with erstwhile assistant coach Mangongo consequently promoted.

"The board looked at the national coaching structures and decided to create the position of national director of coaching responsible for development of cricket from grassroots and grooming of coaches," read a statement from Zimbabwe Cricket.

"Waller was appointed to the position with immediate effect up to the end of his current contract and subject to renewal. The board also appointed Mangongo as substantive national team nead coach with immediate effect."

The Zimbabweans, who recently slipped to a two-two ODI series draw with Afghanistan in Bulawayo – will also contest a limited-overs tri-series with the Proteas and Australia in August.

October and November will bring three Tests and five ODIs against Bangladesh in Mirpur and Chittagong.
