Coach Stephen Mangongo is hopeful a young squad lined with several changes will prove adequate during this month's three-match ODI series at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe have dropped quartet Regis Chakabva, Tendai Chatara, Natsai M'shangwe and Donald Tiripano – and included left-arm seamer Brian Vitori and the uncapped Luke Jongwe, Neville Madziva.

"You can coach them in the nets and do all the training, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so we hope that in this series we'll come out with a clear idea of whether they're up for it or not," said Mangongo.

The Zimbabweans were unable to beat Afghanistan opposition inferior in the International Cricket Council rankings earlier this year, instead drawing a four-match series two-all.

"That tells you that there's something wrong there and we need to fix it. This is part of the road map to fixing it and trying to be competitive against the top teams and able to thrash the associates," added Mangongo.

The three ODIs will be played on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
