South Africa's under 19 captain Aiden Markram was the big winner at Cricket South Africa's awards breakfast on Wednesday, winning the Cricketer of the Year gong for his age group, as well as the club player of the year.
Markram skippered the Baby Proteas to the Under 19 World Cup title earlier this year, the side going unbeaten, and her was the tournament's top scorer. He made two centuries and also a vital 66 in the final against Pakistan.
Markram said: "I'm actually quite shocked at these awards. I never dreamed that this past year would work out this way. I'm so happy to have been able to give our country something to be proud of.
"There is no way I would have been able to accomplish anything without my teammates, coaches and parents. I want to thank them for everything they have done for me. I only hope that I can continue to do good things for the country."
The women's winner of the under 19 category was 18-year-old Sune Luus, who played for the senior side at the Women's World Twenty20 earlier this year, where they reached the semi-finals. She has 18 T20s and 11 ODIs to her name already.
She said of her progress: "It's been such an exciting season for me. There has been a lot of growing and hard work and none of that would have happened without the great support system that I have which includes my parents, coaches and teammates, both national and domestic."
The professional awards ceremony will be held in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
